TEF Canada score for PR — what to target and why

French is one of the highest-leverage moves left in Express Entry. Here are the exact NCLC thresholds, what they're worth in CRS points, and how to reach them.

The magic number: NCLC 7 in all four skills

For Express Entry, NCLC 7 across reading, listening, writing, and speaking unlocks the French-language bonus — up to 50 additional CRS points (50 with CLB 5+ English, 25 otherwise) — and eligibility for French-category draws, whose cut-offs have historically been far below general draws. One skill below 7 and the bonus is gone: your weakest skill is your real score.

Why French is the highest-impact CRS move

  • Up to 50 bonus points — among the largest single boosts available to most candidates since job-offer points were removed from the CRS.
  • Category draws — French-proficiency draws regularly invite candidates at dramatically lower CRS scores than general draws.
  • Compounding gains — if French is your first official language, higher NCLC levels (9, 10) also raise your core human-capital points per skill.

How to reach NCLC 7 (or 9)

Work backwards from the thresholds. Take a diagnostic mock in each skill, compare your estimated band against the table above with the CLB calculator, then follow the study plan that matches your gap. Most B1–B2 candidates reach NCLC 7 in 8–12 weeks of structured mock-test practice.

Frequently asked questions

What TEF Canada score do I need for Canada PR?

For the French-speaking Express Entry advantages, target NCLC 7 in all four skills: roughly Reading 207/300, Listening 249/360, Writing 310/450, Speaking 310/450 (tests after December 10, 2023). Program requirements vary — verify on canada.ca.

How many CRS points does French give?

Up to 50 additional points: NCLC 7+ in all four French skills plus CLB 5+ in English earns 50; NCLC 7+ French with weaker English earns 25. That's on top of the core language points French itself contributes.

What are French-category Express Entry draws?

IRCC runs category-based draws for strong French speakers, whose CRS cut-offs have historically been far below general draws — at times more than 100 points lower. NCLC 7 in all four skills is the entry ticket.

Is NCLC 9 worth chasing?

If French is your first official language, yes: per-skill core points jump significantly at CLB 9 and again at CLB 10. If French is your second language, the 50-point bonus at NCLC 7 is the main prize.

How long are results valid?

Two years for IRCC purposes. Book your exam so results remain valid until you receive your invitation and submit your application.
