The two writing tasks
Section A (≈80 words, 20 minutes): continue a news brief — a fait divers — in a neutral, journalistic register. Example prompt from our bank:
“Après des années passées à l’école à entendre les moqueries des autres élèves, un homme de 30 ans a gagné l’admiration de tout le monde lors d’une réunion d’anciens élèves.”
Section B (≈200 words, 40 minutes): take a position on a statement and defend it with structured arguments, examples, and connectors — the skill examiners weight most heavily.

Frequently asked questions
What are the TEF Canada writing tasks?
Expression écrite has two tasks: Section A, a short factual news-style text (fait divers) of about 80 words continuing a given opening, and Section B, a longer argumentative text of about 200 words giving your opinion. Together they're scored out of 450.
What writing score do I need for CLB 7?
310 out of 450 (tests after December 10, 2023). CLB 9 requires 371. Examiners reward structure, connectors, and register as much as grammar.
How does the writing feedback work?
As you write, you get a live word count against the target. On submit, the analysis highlights your logical connectors, flags overused words, measures vocabulary variety and sentence length, and then reveals a complete model answer for the exact prompt.
How many prompts are included?
145 prompts — 72 for Section A and 73 for Section B — each with its own model answer. The first prompt of each section is free.
